Richard Brodie Interview.

By Sam Heaney

Former Minsterman, Richard Brodie came off the bench to score the winning goal in the second half for Fleetwood Town as they fought for a priceless 0-1 victory over York City.

‘We played a good York City side, in front of a big crowd. To go there and get a result like that is massive! Not many teams turn up and get a draw on their patch so to win was great.’

Top goal scorer, Jamie Vardy played the killer pass to Brodie down the right for the goal, adding to the number 33’s collection of assists.

‘The goal I scored is a bit of a trademark for me, having scored similar ones for York. After cutting in, everything opened up for me with the extra touch, which hasn’t really worked for me this season. There was only one place I was going to put it. To watch the shot go in has to be one of the best feelings I’ve experienced as a footballer.

It was the Forwards 10th goal of the season and could prove to be the most important.

‘To win was magnificent. However to score a goal at that time, at this stage of the season, at that ground, it couldn’t have been a better day for me especially scoring it in front of my Nan and Grandad who made the trip down from Newcastle.’

‘I really wanted to get on in the game. I got a little bit of stick from the home support which I thought was unfair, but that’s football, it can be funny. I thought about not celebrating but for what it meant to the me and the club it took all of that away.’

York caused Fleetwood a lot of problems during the game and showed why they are having a successful season themselves.

‘Gary Mills has took over and had a lot of money to spend. He’s spent it well and York even had a few injury’s also players playing out of position but there is no room in football to feel sorry for people.’

‘We were out there representing Fleetwood Town and we’ve come out on top, we didn’t play too well but nevertheless a win is a win.

Town are close to sealing promotion to the Football League and are staying focused and taking nothing for granted.

‘We have enough experience and determination to win in the group. There are players like Steve McNulty and Jamie McGuire that have come up through the Conference North with Fleetwood and are close to entering the Football League. There’s also players that have stepped down and are keen to get back up as soon as possible. We’re in it together and it would be a great achievement for the club to reach League 2.’

A terrific 477 members of the Cod Army made the trip to the East to support their club as the season reaches its climax.

‘It was great to score at the end where the supporters were positioned. It was probably better that way, perhaps at the other end I would have got carried away. To see them all jumping for joy when the goal went in was such a great feeling. The support was great, they sang their hearts out like they have all season. We are doing this for them as well.’

Brodie has made 21 appearances this season for Town with 18 of them from the bench. The number 9’s put in some strong performances this season and will be hoping for more game time in the upcoming games.
