Bath City v Fleetwood Town. Match Report.

By Sam Heaney

Fleetwood went into this fixture in search of yet another win to stretch their unbeaten run to 26 games.

The Cod Army did this thanks to goals from Peter Cavanagh, Richard Brodie and a double from Jamie Vardy.

The first chance of the game fell to the league leaders. Forward, Gareth Seddon played a cushioned header into the path of Jamie McGuire but the Town midfielder could only head straight into the arms of Glyn Garner after just 6 minutes.

Seddon was then involved once again this time his volley looked like a certain goal before Sekani Simpson managed to somehow block the shot off the line and keep the game level.

Lee Fowler made a positive start and commanded the midfield for Town. His perfectly weighted through ball released Jamie Vardy down the right. The Fleetwood hotshot outpaced the Bath defence before lifting the ball over Garner to finish calmly for his 29th league goal of the season.

The Cod Army thought they
d made it 2-0 when Alan Goodalls corner found the head of McGuire. His perfectly placed header into the corner of the was ruled out by the assistant for a Andy Mangan foul on the keeper.

This urged Town on and 9 minutes before half time Fowler played the ball into Cavanagh who hit a firm strike, first time, into the bottom right hand corner from 25 yards to put Town in control of the game.

Mangan fancied his chances a minute from the break when a darting run down the right saw him cut onto his weaker left foot and then fire over from 30 yards.

It was a convincing performance from Fleetwood in the first half which saw the leaders dominate possession and keeping bottom placed Bath pinned back.

Baths first opportunity of the game came to lone forward, Jamie Cook. The snapshot was dragged wide from the number nine but gave a lot of hope for the side that sat bottom of the league.

Substitute Richard Brodie made an instant impact on the game, his right-footed shot deflected wide of the right post and out for a corner. Goodall took the corner and substitute Richard Brodie, on for Seddon, powered in to head forcing Garner into a terrific reflex save.

Mangan then found time on the ball in the centre of the park played a defence-splitting ball into Shaun Beeley. The right-back then crossed for Vardy who had a simple tap-in for his 32nd goal of the season. This put Town 3-0 up and the home side started to look disheartened.

Chances started to come thick and fast. A side-footed effort from Cavanagh had Garner beaten but went the wrong side of the post. Just 3 minutes later Richard Brodie raced through the Bath City defence and coolly slotted the ball across the keeper and into bottom right hand corner.

The game may have looked over as the last 10 minutes closed in but Bath had different ideas.

On the 81st minute Bath created their second decent chance of the game. Second half substitute Lewis Hoggs shot was saved well by Scott Davies at his left post.

Bath started to come on top of the game and after good work and cross from Cook down the right Adam Connelly climbed high inside the box to head into the opposite corner to beat Davies but the goal would only came as a conciliation.

Davies was brought into action 2 minutes from time when Burnells volley from 6 yards looked a certainty until his effort was saved and put over for a corner.

It was a positive performance for Fleetwood Town carrying on their impressive run in the hunt for the title. With Wrexham having to score a late equaliser at Cambridge, Town look widen the gap at the top of the Blue Square Bet Premier to 8 points.
